4 Dell Compellent Using Storage Center with FCoE and Linux

Executive summary

Managing and scaling network infrastructure is often an expensive proposition for organizations of any

size. It is for the above reasons and more, whereby system managers’ and system administrators’ try to

leverage and optimize the use of their existing infrastructure without compromising their network needs

or performance. This paper attempts to address some of the above concerns by leveraging the use of

Linux with the open source open-FCoE IO stack to achieve competitive SAN delivery and performance in

use with Dell Compellent Storage Center over any existing Ethernet infrastructure.

Purpose

This paper outlines and defines the administrative concepts and tasks regarding setting up, configuring

and using Linux with Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) with Dell Compellent Storage Center. As is

common with Unix/Linux environments, there are various ways to accomplish any particular task; the

examples in this paper merely represent one of these various ways to accomplish these tasks.
